The call for applications is now open for the 2026 Abel Prize Travel Fellowships, an exceptional opportunity for science journalists worldwide. Organized by the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ) in collaboration with The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, this program offers two fully funded travel fellowships. These fellowships will enable science journalists to attend the prestigious Abel Prize Week in Oslo, Norway, scheduled from 25 to 28 May 2026.
Fellows selected through this program will have the unique chance to engage directly with the Abel Prize celebrations, gaining firsthand experience at one of the most distinguished events in the mathematical sciences. They will meet prominent mathematicians, cover cutting-edge research honored by the prize, and report on the developments and insights shared during the week. Participants will be granted access to all official events hosted by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, including the highly anticipated Abel Prize award ceremony. Additionally, journalists will receive opportunities to interview the Abel Prize laureate(s), providing exclusive content for their audiences.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for these fellowships, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a professional science journalist, either employed full-time on staff or working as a freelancer.
- Possess recent experience in science journalism within the last five years, with a preference for those who have reported on mathematics or fundamental sciences.
- Be available to attend the full duration of the Abel Prize Week in Oslo from 25 to 28 May 2026.
- Journalists working across all media formats—including print, digital platforms, broadcast, podcasting, and multimedia—are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply
Applicants should submit their materials by emailing info@wfsj.org with the subject line: Application: Abel Prize Travel Fellowships for Science Journalists. The application package must include:
- A detailed CV featuring contact details, current professional affiliation (if applicable), and any social media handles related to journalism.
- A one-page essay (maximum 500 words) written in English. This should explain why you deserve the fellowship and outline your journalistic plans if selected.
- Three recent examples of your published or broadcast work. These can be links to print articles, audio, or video content. While submissions in any language are accepted, please provide an English translation or summary where necessary.
- A clear copy of the identification page of your passport.
Selection Procedure
A jury, formed by members of the WFSJ Board or nominees appointed by the Board, will carefully review all applications. From this pool, two recipients will be chosen to receive the fellowship for 2026.
