This cutting-edge initiative is part of the AI for Science stream within the Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences offered by AIMS South Africa. The program is established through a strategic collaboration with Google DeepMind, aiming to blend the fields of artificial intelligence and science into a unique academic experience.

The AI for Science program launched its inaugural cohort in September 2023 and is designed as a fully residential, one-year taught Master’s degree, which also integrates a research component. This program invites passionate students from across the African continent who are deeply interested in mathematics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be residents of Africa at the time of application*
  • They should hold citizenship of any African country
  • A completed undergraduate degree of four years or a three-year degree supplemented by an honours year is required by August 2025; however, applicants from Southern Africa may have a deadline until December 2025 (further details can be found in the FAQ)
  • Previous recipients of scholarships to study at any AIMS centre are ineligible to apply

*The residency requirement means applicants must physically reside in Africa when submitting their application.

Scholarship Benefits

Funded by a generous contribution from Google DeepMind, this scholarship supports 40 students annually over a four-year span starting from September 2023. The comprehensive funding package covers full tuition fees, necessary equipment, and computing resources, ensuring students have everything required to excel academically and in their research.

Application Process and Required Documents

Applicants must prepare and upload the following documents before the deadline of 11:59 PM on 6 March 2026:

  • A detailed curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A motivation letter approximately 500 words in length, explaining your interest and goals
  • Official academic transcripts
  • Representative samples of your prior work in mathematical sciences, which can be submitted via the application site
  • Completion of a coding problem available on the application portal
