Applications are now open for the 2026 Fully Funded MINDS Scholarship Programme for Leadership Development in Africa

Application Deadline: Not Specified

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 edition of the fully funded MINDS Scholarship Programme for Leadership Development in Africa. This initiative is designed to empower African nationals by enabling them to undertake postgraduate education in a different African country, while simultaneously cultivating the leadership capabilities essential for driving the continent’s advancement.

The Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) places special emphasis on encouraging applications from women and young people living with disabilities, recognizing the invaluable contributions their diverse perspectives bring to leadership roles. If you are driven by a passion for Africa, dedicated to making a meaningful impact, and prepared to lead beyond national boundaries, this scholarship opportunity is tailored for you.

Programme Overview

Since its inception in 2017, the MINDS Scholarship Programme for Leadership Development in Africa has been a catalyst for nurturing young leaders with a pan-African vision. The programme aims to cultivate individuals who not only possess a development mindset encompassing the entire continent but who also actively promote stronger collaboration and unity among African nations.

This scholarship uniquely facilitates the experience of studying in an African country other than one’s own, immersing scholars in the cultural, academic, and social diversity that these nations offer. By broadening educational access within Africa, MINDS fosters openness to new ideas, while simultaneously building a vibrant network of like-minded leaders committed to accelerating Africa’s progress. The vision is clear: a more integrated and globally competitive African economy will drive sustainable growth and create lasting benefits for communities across the continent.

How the Scholarship Functions

MINDS offers scholarships to African students who wish to pursue postgraduate studies outside their home countries within Africa. The programme includes tailored leadership development components aimed at shaping leaders who embrace a continental development perspective and who can nurture greater unity and cooperation among African states.

The scholarship is applicable for full-time postgraduate studies, specifically one- or two-year Honors or Master’s degree programmes, at selected institutions endorsed by MINDS. Importantly, applicants have the freedom to choose their field of study without restriction.

Depending on whether a full or partial scholarship is granted, the funding may cover a variety of expenses, including:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation and meals
  • One round-trip airfare during the course of study
  • A fixed monthly stipend

MINDS seeks candidates who demonstrate a strong Pan-African outlook, proven leadership potential, and academic excellence, inviting them to apply for this prestigious scholarship to pursue studies anywhere on the continent outside their country of origin.

The awarding of MINDS Scholarships is highly competitive and follows a stringent selection process. To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:
