Who Should Apply?
The Hardiman PhD Scholarships are intended for high-achieving, motivated individuals commencing their PhD studies in September 2026. These scholarships offer full financial support for four years, covering tuition fees in addition to an annual stipend of €25,000. Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must hold a first-class or upper second-class honours degree (or an equivalent qualification).
- Current PhD students or those who have already been awarded a PhD are not eligible to apply.

Application Procedure
Before submitting an application, candidates must thoroughly review the Applicant’s Guide, which contains essential instructions for completing the process.
- Find a Supervisor: Applicants need to select and nominate a supervisor for their proposed research project. Supervisors must submit a supporting form by the deadline of 6 February 2026 at 17:00 Irish Time. To locate a suitable supervisor, applicants can click here.
- Submit Application: Complete applications must be delivered by 6 February 2026 (17:00 Irish Time). Applications can be submitted in either English or Irish.
- Provide Academic References: Two academic references attesting to the applicant’s suitability and potential for doctoral research must be received by the same deadline.
Evaluation Process
Applications will be evaluated on the basis of academic excellence and the overall quality of the submission. Incomplete applications, including those missing the supervisor’s form or references, or those received after the closing date, will not be considered.
Applicants with disabilities who express interest in being considered under the designated criterion for candidates with disabilities (indicated by selecting the relevant option in Question 10 of the application form) must provide official verification of their disability by the deadline.
A panel of experienced assessors, representing diverse academic backgrounds, will review all complete applications. Each submission will be evaluated according to four key criteria, with the following scoring system:
- Personal Research Statement – up to 50 points
- Academic Qualifications – up to 30 points
- Referees’ Reports – up to 10 points
- Prior Research Experience – up to 10 points
Following the scoring, shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews as part of the final selection process.
