The 2026 edition of the Bayer Foundation Scientific Fellowships is now accepting applications. These prestigious fellowships are designed to support outstanding master’s, PhD, and medical students, as well as student teachers and educators, in pursuing international research opportunities. The Bayer Foundation provides additional financial support specifically to facilitate international placements, thereby enriching the academic and professional development of candidates.
In alignment with Bayer’s dedication to promoting gender equality in scientific fields, applications are especially encouraged from women, individuals from low- and middle-income countries, parents who have caregiving responsibilities, and persons residing in Germany who speak German as a second language.
Eligibility and Fellowship Categories
The Bayer Foundation offers several specialized fellowship tracks catering to diverse scientific disciplines:
- Drug Discovery Sciences Fellowship: Open to master’s and PhD students from all scientific backgrounds, including pharmacy and data science. Candidates should be engaged in fundamental or applied research relevant to the pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare sectors, particularly those focusing on over-the-counter products.
- Agricultural Science Fellowship: Designed for master’s and PhD students across scientific fields, including data science, concentrating on basic or applied studies that have significance for the Crop Science industry.
- Medical Sciences Fellowship: Available to students pursuing studies in human or veterinary medicine, as well as master’s and PhD candidates specializing in medical engineering, applied medical sciences, data science related to medicine, and public health.
- New! Climate & Health Fellowship: Targeted at students in human or veterinary medicine and master’s or PhD candidates in natural sciences, pharmacy, public health, or epidemiology. This fellowship emphasizes research on the health effects of climate change, with particular interest in:
- The health of women and other vulnerable groups
- Cardio-renal health
- Neglected tropical diseases
- Respiratory health
These fellowships honor the legacies of Otto Bayer, former Director of Research at Bayer; Jeff Schell, co-founder of Plant Genetic Systems (now part of Bayer Crop Science); and Carl Duisberg, former Chairman of the Board of Management at Bayer.
Fellowship Benefits and Conditions
Selected recipients will receive a grant of up to €10,000. The duration of the fellowship can be up to six months, during which fellows may engage in diverse activities such as research projects, internships, and other relevant academic endeavors.
Applicants currently studying in Germany are required to complete their fellowship placement in a different country, whereas those studying outside of Germany must undertake their fellowship at a recognized German research institution.
