Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 edition of the ICGEB Arturo Falaschi Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. This prestigious initiative by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) aims to support highly driven scientists from developing countries who wish to conduct advanced postdoctoral research within a top-tier international scientific setting.

The fellowship offers an attractive and competitive package that includes a monthly stipend, comprehensive health insurance, and various other benefits to support the fellows during their tenure. Additionally, those fellows who demonstrate exceptional performance may qualify, after successfully completing their fellowship, to apply for the ICGEB Early Career Research Grants. These grants are designed to aid young principal investigators in establishing independent research programs upon returning to their home countries, specifically within an ICGEB Member State.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must be citizens of an ICGEB Member State. However, candidates are not eligible to apply for fellowships to be carried out in their country of origin unless they have been residing and working abroad for a minimum of three consecutive years at the time of application. Regarding academic qualifications, eligible candidates should have recently earned a PhD in Life Sciences or possess at least three years of relevant research experience. Preference will be given to candidates under the age of 35.

Fellowship Benefits and Duration

  • Duration: The fellowship lasts for two years, with the possibility of extending it for an additional year.
  • Monthly Stipend: The stipend varies depending on the host ICGEB laboratory location:
    • Trieste, Italy: €2,300
    • New Delhi, India: US$1,749
    • Cape Town, South Africa: ZAR 27,500
  • Travel Support: Travel expenses from the fellow’s home country to the ICGEB host lab at the start of the fellowship, and return travel upon completion, are covered by the program.
  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive medical insurance is provided for the entire fellowship period.
  • Research Funding: Research-related costs are financed through the host research group’s budget.
  • Visa and Permit Fees: Costs related to visa or residency permit applications and renewals are reimbursed.
  • Participation in Conferences and Courses: Generally supported by the Group Leader or Principal Investigator of the hosting laboratory.

Please note that ICGEB does not provide financial or administrative support for family members accompanying the fellows.

Accommodation Details

  • ICGEB Trieste: While no official housing services or accommodations are offered, fellows will receive a list of contacts and resources to explore housing options within Trieste.
  • ICGEB New Delhi: On-campus guest house accommodation is available on a twin-sharing basis at a nominal fee.
  • ICGEB Cape Town: Accommodation assistance is provided directly to fellows, with arrangements made before their arrival.

Required Application Documents

  • Identification Document: A valid passport or identity card is required. The passport should ideally be valid for at least 12 months beyond the application date.
  • English Language Proficiency: An English proficiency certificate such as TOEFL, Cambridge, or an equivalent test. This requirement is waived if English was the medium of instruction during the applicant’s studies, provided the university issues an official certificate confirming this.
