Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 cycle of the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP). This prestigious scholarship opportunity is designed specifically for nationals of certain developing countries who have relevant professional backgrounds and demonstrated commitment to contributing to their home countries’ development. The program targets candidates applying to master’s degree programs focused on development-related fields.
Depending on available funding, the JJ/WBGSP awards scholarships for 44 designated Master’s Programs spread across 24 universities located in regions such as the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan. These programs emphasize critical development sectors including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management, among others.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Be a citizen of a World Bank member developing country listed on this list.
- Not possess dual citizenship from any developed country.
- Be in sound health to undertake graduate studies abroad.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification obtained at least three years before the application deadline.
- Be employed full-time in a paid, development-related role at the time of submitting the scholarship application.
- Possess a minimum of three years of paid professional experience in development-related work acquired within the past six years prior to the application deadline.
Scholarship Benefits
The JJ/WBGSP scholarship package covers a comprehensive range of expenses to support scholars during their studies, including:
- Economy-class round-trip airfare between the recipient’s home country and the host university at both the beginning and conclusion of the study program. In addition to airfare, scholars receive a US $600 travel allowance for each trip.
- Full payment of tuition fees for the chosen graduate program as well as coverage of basic medical insurance arranged through the university.
- A monthly living allowance to cover accommodation, food, books, and other essential expenses while studying on campus. The amount varies depending on the host country’s cost of living.
