NRF Postdoctoral Fellowships 2027 for emerging South African Researchers.

NRF Postdoctoral Fellowships 2027 for emerging South African Researchers.

Application Deadline: April 15, 2026

The call for applications is now open for the 2027 NRF Postdoctoral Fellowships, a prestigious programme dedicated to fostering postdoctoral research training across a diverse array of academic disciplines. This initiative encompasses fields such as science, engineering, technology, social sciences, and the humanities. It forms a vital component of South Africa’s comprehensive strategy aimed at reinforcing the national research infrastructure, nurturing upcoming generations of scientists, and addressing urgent skills shortages in the country’s research landscape.

Implementation of this fellowship scheme is a collaborative effort between the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), underscoring a unified national commitment to advancing research excellence.

Objectives and Structure of the NRF Postdoctoral Fellowships

The fellowship framework provides clear funding guidelines for three distinct categories of fellowships, each designed to enhance South Africa’s research capacity and foster innovation. These categories include:

  • Freestanding Postdoctoral Fellowships
  • Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowships
  • Scarce Skills Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Freestanding and Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowships receive financial support from the Department of Science and Innovation, whereas the Scarce Skills Fellowships are funded via the National Skills Fund, managed under the Department of Higher Education and Training. The overarching goal of these fellowships is to empower early-career researchers to undertake advanced research training that not only bolsters their expertise but also contributes significantly to knowledge generation and innovation within South Africa’s research ecosystem.

Research Areas and National Priorities

Postdoctoral fellows are supported across a wide spectrum of disciplines, with a strategic emphasis on topics aligned with South Africa’s national priorities as outlined in the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Decadal Plan (2022–2032). The key thematic areas prioritized by the programme include:

  • Circular Economy
  • Education for the Future
  • Sustainable Energy
  • The Future of Society
  • Health Innovation
  • High-Tech Industrialisation
  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Smart Systems
  • Nutrition Security
  • Water Security

Supported fields span a comprehensive range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Astronomy and Astrophysics
  • Biotechnology and Bioinformatics
  • Chemistry and Physics
  • Climate Change and Environmental Sciences
  • Computer Science and Data Science
  • Engineering and Materials Science
  • Health Sciences and Medical Research
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems
  • Law and Social Sciences
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Renewable Energy
  • Space Science

The NRF strives to maintain a balanced distribution of disciplines among fellowship recipients, with an approximate split of 80% allocated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields and 20% directed towards Social Sciences and Humanities.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the NRF Postdoctoral Fellowship programme, applicants must satisfy a range of eligibility requirements, including:

  • Conducting research at a recognized public research institution within South Africa, such as universities, science councils, or national research facilities.
  • Having obtained a doctoral degree within the last five years.
  • Applicants who are in the final stages of completing their doctoral dissertation may apply, but they must have completed and been awarded their PhD by December 31, 2026.
  • Fellowship awards must be commenced by June 30, 2027.
  • Full-time employees may apply only if they plan to take unpaid leave for the duration of their fellowship tenure.
  • Applicants seeking a second NRF postdoctoral fellowship must demonstrate a new research project different from any previous NRF fellowship work.
  • Applications for a third NRF postdoctoral fellowship are not accepted under this programme.

Citizenship and Fellowship Category Eligibility

Eligibility concerning citizenship varies by the fellowship category:

  • The Freestanding and Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to South African citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants.
  • The Scarce Skills Postdoctoral Fellowships are restricted to South African citizens and permanent residents only.

Funding Details and Duration

Successful candidates will be awarded funding support for a maximum period of two years. The financial package includes:

  • An annual, non-taxable stipend of R320,000.
  • A yearly research allowance of R50,000 to cover project-related expenses.
  • A minimum contribution of R15,000 from the host institution to support the fellow’s research activities.

Additionally, female postdoctoral fellows who require maternity leave during their fellowship tenure are eligible for an extension of up to four additional months of funding beyond the standard two-year period, ensuring continuity and support during this time.
