The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR) has officially opened applications for its 2026 Minorities Fellowship Programme (MFP), a unique and fully funded opportunity based in Geneva, Switzerland. Established in 2005, this fellowship is recognized as OHCHR’s flagship training initiative specifically designed for human rights defenders who belong to national, ethnic, religious, or linguistic minority groups.
Throughout the course of the programme, participants will acquire a broad and in-depth understanding of the United Nations system, including key international human rights instruments and mechanisms, with a particular emphasis on the protection and promotion of minority rights. Additionally, the fellowship acts as a valuable platform for networking, enabling activists to connect strategically with global counterparts, United Nations officials, and key Geneva-based non-governmental organizations engaged in human rights work.
The training is conducted in three main languages—English, Russian, and Arabic—and the fellowship sessions take place in Geneva, Switzerland, generally during the month of November each year. A preparatory training phase is also held in Strasbourg, France, lasting one week, prior to the Geneva sessions.

- Applicants must be members of a minority group defined by national, ethnic, linguistic, or religious identity. Individuals who do not personally belong to minority groups will not be considered, regardless of their close involvement or affiliation with minority communities or organizations.
- Indigenous persons interested in this type of fellowship are advised to apply to the separate Indigenous Fellowship Programme, which follows a different application process.
- Formal academic qualifications are not mandatory; however, candidates must demonstrate relevant experience related to human rights or minority issues.

Selection Procedure
The selection process begins with a pre-screening phase, where around 15 to 20 candidates per language group are shortlisted by alumni of the fellowship. Those shortlisted then undergo an interview round. The ultimate decision rests with an advisory committee composed of OHCHR personnel. Due to the competitive nature and high volume of applications, only applicants who are selected will be contacted.
Application Details
Applicants must complete both parts I and II of the application form and include an official recommendation letter from the nominating organization or community, uploaded directly via the online form. Completed submissions missing any required components will not be considered.
The application deadline is 31 January 2026, 23:59 (Geneva time). Prospective applicants are encouraged to submit their applications well before this cut-off to avoid last-minute technical issues.
