The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) has officially opened applications for its 2026/2027 Research Development Fellowship Programme. This initiative is designed to bolster the careers of early-stage African researchers who are making significant contributions to pressing human health issues. Through this fellowship, the program aims to enhance the professional capabilities and expertise of emerging research leaders across the continent.
Who Should Apply?

Programme Benefits
- Placement duration: Fellows will undertake a research placement lasting between three and nine months at a top-tier institution. These host institutions may be located in the UK, Europe, or elsewhere in Africa.
- Institutional support: Throughout the fellowship, both before departure and after return, fellows will receive support to maximize the impact of their placement at their home research institutions.
- Financial assistance: The fellowship provides up to £47,000 to cover essential expenses such as accommodation, travel, daily subsistence, and training-related costs.
When Can Fellowships Begin?
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to start their fellowship placements any time from June 2027, with a final allowable start date no later than December 2027.
