Applications are currently being accepted for the esteemed 2026 African STARS Fellowship Programme. This initiative is jointly hosted by the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and the Center for Africa’s Resilience to Epidemics (CARE) at the Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) in Senegal. Supported generously by the Mastercard Foundation, this program is dedicated to nurturing Africa’s upcoming generation of leaders in the fields of genomics, diagnostics, vaccine design, and biotechnology innovation.
The African STARS Fellowship Programme is designed to equip promising young health professionals and entrepreneurs with advanced technical skills, leadership capabilities, and valuable career development opportunities. These competencies are crucial for reinforcing Africa’s healthcare infrastructure and scientific research landscape.
Fellowship Opportunities

Advanced and Translational Training (ATT) Fellowship – 4 months
This track offers intensive, hands-on training in sophisticated genomics applications for public health, the design of genomic diagnostics, and vaccine manufacturing techniques. It caters primarily to early-career scientists and professionals who seek to deepen their specialized technical expertise. Alongside scientific instruction, fellows will receive leadership training covering areas such as grant and financial management, team leadership, and strategic decision-making. -
Young Professional Programme (YPP) Fellowship – 12 months
Focused on fostering biotechnology innovation and entrepreneurship, this track includes placements within commercial enterprises, industry players, or innovation hubs. Participants will develop critical soft skills including problem-solving, critical thinking, effective writing, grant proposal development, communication, and project management. This fellowship is tailored for young scientists and entrepreneurs who wish to bridge the divide between academic research and the biotechnology industry.
Who Should Apply?
- Applicants must be born in Africa or currently reside on the continent.
- Age requirement: 35 years or younger at the time of application.
- A relevant postgraduate degree is mandatory, with a minimum qualification of a Master’s degree; a PhD qualification is considered an advantage.
- For the ATT track: candidates should possess at least 3 years of experience in research, innovation, or industry roles.
- For the YPP track: a minimum of 5 years of experience in research management, innovation, or commercialization is required; previous involvement with biotech startups, innovation hubs, or translational research is highly valued.
- Proven excellence in any of the following domains: genomics, diagnostics, biotechnology, or vaccine development.
- Strong leadership potential coupled with a firm commitment to strengthening Africa’s scientific capabilities.
- Willingness to remain within Africa and contribute to local scientific, entrepreneurial, and public health advancements.
- Fluency in either English or French is necessary; proficiency in both languages is considered an asset.
- Women are particularly encouraged to submit applications to foster gender diversity.
