Applications are currently being accepted for the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation University Fellowship Programme for the year 2026. This prestigious fellowship seeks to identify and support young, driven South Africans who are on the cusp of beginning their university studies and who aspire to create meaningful change—not only within their own lives but also in their communities, cities, and the broader nation.

The Allan Gray University Fellowship Programme provides recipients with financial assistance based on need, as well as access to a range of developmental resources designed to nurture an entrepreneurial mindset and leadership skills.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Achieve at least 60% in Pure Mathematics or a minimum of 80% in Mathematical Literacy based on final Grade 11 results
  • Obtain an overall average of 70% or above in final Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Be in Grade 12 during the year of application
  • Be under 21 years of age in the application year
  • Hold South African citizenship
  • Intend to pursue a degree in Commerce, Science, Engineering, Law, Humanities, Arts, or Health Sciences (Note: Medicine, Veterinary Science, and Dentistry are excluded)
  • Plan to study at one of the following universities: WITS, UJ, UCT, NMU, RU, UWC, SU, UP, UFS, UKZN, or TSiBA

What the Fellowship Offers

Academic and Financial Aid

  • Applicants from households with a combined annual income of R1 million or less will receive comprehensive funding. This includes university fees, accommodation, meals, textbooks, tutoring allowances, and a monthly stipend.
  • Those from households earning above R1 million annually will be considered for needs-based financial support. Specific funding details will be communicated to successful candidates following the camp selection stage.

Entrepreneurial and Developmental Support

  • Each Fellow is paired with a dedicated mentor from the foundation staff and assigned a business mentor to guide entrepreneurial growth.
  • Access to an exclusive online entrepreneurial curriculum designed to build business acumen and skills.
  • Opportunities to attend an annual entrepreneurship conference, along with various seminars and workshops throughout the year.
  • Membership in a vibrant community of like-minded young entrepreneurs.
  • Access to business incubation facilities to nurture start-up ideas.
  • Eligibility to apply for venture funding through e squared, a sister entity of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation. This funding is available to students participating in the IVC programme and alumni, contingent on the viability of their business proposals.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted either online or via postal mail by 30 April 2026, 17:00 SAST. It is highly recommended that applicants allocate sufficient time—ideally two full days—to complete the application form thoroughly to ensure the best possible submission.

The selection process involves multiple stages:

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews scheduled in July 2026.
  • Successful interviewees will then be invited to attend a selection camp in September 2026.
