The ARISE Project 2026 PhD Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The ARISE Project 2026 PhD Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Application Deadline: 31 March 2026

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 ARISE Project PhD Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), through its ARISE initiative—Advancing Responsible and Gender-Inclusive Artificial Intelligence Capacity in Africa’s Higher Education Ecosystem—is calling for candidates to apply for PhD scholarships in AI-related disciplines. These scholarships are designed to bolster Africa’s AI research capabilities by supporting doctoral candidates engaged in responsible and gender-sensitive AI research that directly aligns with the continent’s strategic development goals.

A total of ten (10) PhD students already enrolled at African universities will receive support that includes not only funding but also opportunities to participate in international AI-focused conferences and workshops.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be African citizens or permanent residents residing in Africa, with a demonstrated dedication to advancing Africa’s development via AI technologies.
  • Must be currently enrolled in or admitted to a doctoral program at a recognized African higher education institution.
  • Research proposals should focus on responsible AI applications within ATPS’s thematic areas such as agriculture, climate change, energy, healthcare, education, the digital economy, and creative industries.
  • Proposals must incorporate elements of gender responsiveness, ethical AI frameworks, equity, and inclusivity.
  • Applicants should clearly demonstrate how their research addresses existing AI skills shortages across Africa.
  • A strong academic background is essential, including possession of at least a Master’s degree and relevant scholarly publications or patents.

Application Guidelines

Prospective candidates are required to submit a comprehensive research proposal, not exceeding eight (8) pages, which details the study’s objectives, research methodology, anticipated results, potential impact, and how it aligns with ARISE’s mission.

Supporting documents to be included in the application package are:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Two letters of recommendation (one academic and one professional)
  • Proof of PhD enrollment or acceptance

It is important that applications emphasize approaches to responsible and gender-inclusive AI research.

All applications must be submitted via the ATPS online portal by 15 March 2026. Selection will be conducted through an open, merit-based process designed to promote equity, diversity, and gender inclusion.

These fellowships aim to empower postdoctoral researchers to advance AI research and deploy sophisticated AI tools to tackle critical challenges facing Africa, including food insecurity, climate change, health crises, and environmental sustainability.

Fellows will also receive support to attend international AI conferences and workshops held within Africa, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Who Should Apply?

  • Applicants must be African nationals or permanent residents.
  • Must have earned a PhD in an AI-related discipline within the past five years.
  • Applicants must be hosted by a reputable African institution that is actively involved in AI research and development.
  • Research proposals must focus on responsible, ethical, and gender-inclusive AI, aligning with ATPS thematic priorities.
  • A strong publication record and demonstrated potential for impactful research are required.
  • Fellows must be fully available for the fellowship period and open to relocating if necessary.

Application Instructions

Applicants should prepare a detailed and approved postdoctoral research proposal, limited to eight (8) pages, including the research project description, work plan, expected outputs, potential impacts, and alignment with ARISE objectives.

The application must contain the following documents:

  • PhD certificate
