The City of Johannesburg Municipality has officially opened applications for its 2026 bursary initiative aimed at empowering young South Africans. This bursary program underscores the City's dedication to fostering skills development and expanding educational prospects, not only for municipal employees but also for residents within the Johannesburg metropolitan area.
This year, the City is awarding 200 bursaries to South African youth who are permanent residents of Johannesburg. These bursaries support full-time undergraduate studies across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, including but not limited to:
- Actuarial Science
- International Relations and Protocol
- Built Environment fields such as Architecture, Construction, Urban and Regional Planning, and Quantity Surveying
- Law
- Commerce
- Logistics
- Community Services
- Marketing
- Emergency Management Services
- Municipal Governance focusing on Monitoring and Evaluation
- Engineering in all specializations
- Real Estate including Property Management and Property Valuation
- Health sciences in all areas
- Geo-Information Science (GIS)
- Finance disciplines such as Accounting, Auditing, Small Business Management, Supply Chain Management, Treasury, and Economics
- Information Technology and Management across all fields
Bursary Value
The bursary covers tuition and registration fees, as well as prescribed textbooks and other necessary study materials, up to a maximum amount of R40,000.00 per academic year.
Eligibility and Selection Process
Applicants will be selected purely on the basis of academic excellence. Candidates must be enrolled or intend to enroll in an accredited tertiary institution within South Africa. It is important to note that securing admission at a tertiary institution is the applicant’s responsibility. The bursary is intended for qualifications that last at least one year and is not available for postgraduate studies. Renewal of the bursary each year depends on maintaining satisfactory academic performance.
How to Apply
Applications must be accompanied by certified copies of the following documents:
- The most recent academic transcript or record
- South African identity document
- Proof of Johannesburg residency, such as a water and lights bill or rates and taxes statement
- Proof of parents’ income or death certificate(s) if applicable; alternatively, an affidavit should be provided where the student does not have one or both parents
