The European Parliament’s Sakharov Fellowships 2026 for human rights defenders (Fully Funded to Brussels, Belgium)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2026

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 edition of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Fellowship. This distinguished fellowship program is designed to support up to 14 dedicated human rights defenders originating from countries outside the European Union. Selected participants will benefit from an intensive two-week training experience held in Brussels and at an additional location within an EU Member State.

Since its inception in 2016, the Sakharov Fellowship has been organized annually following an initiative introduced by the Sakharov Prize Community during the 25th Anniversary Conference of the Sakharov Prize. This impactful program aims to empower human rights defenders by providing a comprehensive introduction to the European Union’s human rights policies and mechanisms. Participants gain invaluable insights into the EU Parliament’s human rights activities and the broader European Union framework.

The fellowship includes direct engagement opportunities with Members of the European Parliament, key EU officials, and members of the Brussels-based human rights community. Through a series of expert-led workshops, fellows receive training on critical areas such as advocacy and communication strategies, security and safety protocols, combating disinformation, fostering resilience and well-being, and documenting human rights violations effectively.

Moreover, the program offers fellows dedicated time and space for personal advocacy initiatives, networking, and enhanced communication efforts, allowing them to cultivate meaningful professional relationships and expand their impact.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The selection process emphasizes achieving gender balance and aims to encompass a diverse range of human rights topics and geographic regions. This approach aligns closely with the European Parliament’s political priorities. Applicants should demonstrate a strong track record in human rights advocacy, either through their involvement with non-governmental organizations or other forms of activism, including independent work.

Proficiency in English is mandatory, as applicants must be able to actively participate in discussions and fully engage with the program’s content.

Fellowship Benefits

  • Coverage of round-trip airfare from the fellow’s country of residence to the program locations.
  • Accommodation arrangements for the duration of the fellowship.
  • A daily stipend to cover living expenses during the program.
