The application window is now open for the 2026 bursary initiative offered by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). Operating under the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the NFVF is committed to fostering the equitable advancement of South Africa’s film and video sector. This commitment is realized through financial support directed towards various facets of the industry, including development, production, marketing, and distribution of film content, alongside the education and capacity-building of emerging and established filmmakers.

Beyond funding, the NFVF undertakes commissioned research and compiles industry statistics that serve as valuable resources for the public and stakeholders, delivering insights into the state and progress of the South African film industry.

Aligned with its mission, the NFVF is calling on eligible candidates to submit applications for its International Bursary Programme focused on postgraduate studies in Film and Television. This programme is designed to enhance skills and increase the global competitiveness of South African film and television professionals by enabling them to pursue advanced studies abroad—specifically in courses not available at local tertiary institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must submit their applications at least six (6) months prior to the start date of their intended course.
  • Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents.
  • A strong academic record is required to demonstrate capability and commitment.
  • Applicants must show evidence of financial need.
  • Applicants should have secured acceptance or be enrolled full-time at an accredited international institution offering postgraduate studies in film or television.
  • The course must begin in September or October of 2026.
  • The proposed study programme should not be available within South African higher education institutions.
  • Please note that courses specializing in live performance and acting are excluded from eligibility.
