Application Deadline: April 8, 2026

The application window is now open for the 2027/2028 cycle of the South African Fulbright Foreign Student Program. This prestigious scholarship initiative is designed to support South African university graduates who wish to pursue postgraduate education in the United States. The program offers fully funded opportunities for master's or doctoral level studies, with the exception of MBA programs and medical or veterinary fields that require clinical patient contact.

Candidates are selected through a highly competitive and thorough application process that includes interviews. Successful applicants benefit from extensive support throughout their journey, including assistance with visa applications, health insurance coverage, detailed pre-departure briefings, and re-entry sessions upon completion of their studies in the U.S.

Available Program Options

  • Visiting Student Researcher (Non-degree): This option is aimed at South African PhD candidates currently enrolled at a South African university who wish to conduct research for one year at a U.S. institution. PhD students funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Master’s or PhD Studies: Postgraduate students may apply for scholarships to undertake either a master’s or doctoral degree. Funding covers up to two years of study for one degree program only.
