Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 Umholi we Africa (UwA) Fellowship, an exceptional opportunity tailored for young African leaders eager to create meaningful change. This fully funded, year-long fellowship is crafted to immerse outstanding young African changemakers into influential roles within government and policy arenas. Fellows gain firsthand experience working closely with ministers, parliamentarians, and senior officials in their respective home countries, positioning themselves at the forefront of national development and public service.
Each cycle, the fellowship carefully selects top graduates from the African Leadership Academy and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program to fill strategic positions that provide direct support to high-level public servants. During the 12 months, fellows engage in diverse responsibilities including conducting in-depth research, performing policy analysis, managing projects, crafting communication materials, and offering strategic advice. Beyond practical experience, participants receive exceptional leadership development and mentorship, equipping them to become future leaders in African governance.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must hold citizenship of an African country.
- Must have graduated from either the African Leadership Academy (ALA) or the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
- Must possess at least a university degree.
- Must have a minimum of four years of professional work experience.
- Must show a strong commitment to public service and a clear ambition to pursue leadership roles in politics or policy-making.
Fellowship Roles and Responsibilities
As a fellow, you will be entrusted with various critical tasks, including:
- Providing support to senior public officials through detailed research, data gathering, policy evaluation, and strategic advisory functions.
- Assisting in the planning, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation of projects within governmental or policy institutions to ensure effective implementation.
- Preparing essential documents such as policy briefs, official reports, speeches, and communication materials to aid decision-making and public engagement.
- Facilitating consultations with stakeholders, organizing community outreach, and enhancing public participation in governance processes.
- Participating actively in leadership development programs, including mentorship and coaching, facilitated by the African Leadership for Governance network.
- Embodying principles of ethical leadership, accountability, and innovation throughout your public service tenure.
