Applications are officially open for the 2026 cohort of the United Nations SSDSN Youth Local Pathways Fellowship. Program Overview and Responsibilities
The Local Pathways Fellowship spans ten months, guiding participants through a comprehensive process focused on the localization of SDG 11. Throughout the program, fellows engage with monthly tasks and objectives that include:
- Deepening understanding of the pressing challenges facing urban areas globally, alongside recognizing the tremendous potential these metropolitan hubs have as catalysts for positive transformation. Topics covered range from urban infrastructure and economic development to cultural dynamics and sustainability efforts.
- Applying the insights and knowledge gained to conceptualize and develop a tailored project that addresses specific urban issues relevant to their city or region. This project serves as the principal deliverable and a tangible outcome of the fellowship experience.
- Networking with an extensive community of over 750 fellows representing more than 180 cities in 80 countries. This vibrant peer network fosters a rich exchange of ideas, collaborative resource sharing, and collective problem-solving among young urban leaders worldwide.
- Receiving guidance and mentorship from industry experts via the LPF webinar series, which provides valuable professional insights and supports fellows’ growth.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Prospective applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for the Local Pathways Fellowship:
- Demonstrated passion for sustainable development and alignment with the missions of SDSN and SDSN Youth, particularly in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and adhering to the Paris Agreement on climate change.
- A strong foundation or keen interest in fields connected to urban development such as urban planning, sustainability, urban technology, community engagement, advocacy, or related disciplines.
- At least one year of academic coursework or professional experience in relevant sectors including urban planning, advocacy, or community-driven initiatives.
- Experience in urban sustainability and related fields is highly advantageous and considered a significant asset.
- Ability to maintain consistent communication with the LPF team across various time zones, demonstrating responsiveness.
- Excellent organizational capabilities, leadership qualities, and teamwork skills, with proven ability to coordinate projects and solve challenges collaboratively.
- Fluency in English across all communication modalities—writing, speaking, and listening—as well as proficiency in the local language of the urban area represented.
- Applicants must confirm the availability of sufficient time and resources to fully commit to the program, including reliable internet connectivity.
- Age eligibility is limited to individuals between 18 and 30 years old at the time of application.
