Applications are now being accepted for the 2027 University of California, Berkeley Visiting Fellowships. These fellowships, offered through the Center for African Studies and generously supported by the Mastercard Foundation, are designed to host Africa-based researchers at UC Berkeley. This opportunity is open exclusively to candidates currently residing in African countries who hold academic or research roles within universities, research institutions, think tanks, or non-governmental organizations on the continent.
The primary goal of the Visiting Fellowship is to enable selected scholars to engage in independent research, finalize significant publications such as major articles or books, build collaborative relationships with UC Berkeley faculty, and contribute to the academic environment by mentoring Mastercard Foundation Scholars during their tenure at the university.
Eligibility Requirements
Prospective applicants must satisfy the following criteria:
- Must be living in an African country and affiliated with an African institution, which can be a university, think tank, or NGO.
- Hold a PhD degree awarded on or before January 2022 at the time of application submission.
- Demonstrate the capacity to make meaningful contributions to their academic discipline.
Although research areas are broadly open, preference will be given to projects that address topics related to youth, labor markets, livelihoods, migration and displacement, technology, democracy, and future studies, among others.
