Application Deadline: 13 February 2026, 23:59 (UK time)
The application window is now open for the 2026/2027 University of Oxford Reuters Institute Journalism Fellowship Programme. This prestigious fellowship is designed for mid-career journalists seeking an opportunity to pause their daily professional responsibilities and immerse themselves in a comprehensive study of journalism. Established as one of the foremost programs worldwide, it offers participants the chance to deepen their understanding of the evolving news landscape and their role within it.
The majority of fellows receive full funding, including a monthly stipend that supports accommodation, meals, and other daily expenses, alongside coverage for travel and visa costs. Throughout the fellowship, participants engage in independent research projects, attend seminars, participate in networking events, and collaborate with fellow journalists from across the globe. While residing in Oxford, fellows undertake a focused project intended to have a significant impact on their careers, their newsrooms, and the wider media industry by applying the insights they gain during their stay.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of professional experience in journalism. In exceptional circumstances, equivalent experience in related fields may be considered.
- Freelancers are welcome to apply; however, individuals working in public affairs, public relations, or corporate communications are not eligible.
- The fellowship is open to journalists worldwide, including those from Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America, and Latin America.
- Applicants must intend to return to a journalism role following completion of the fellowship.
- While formal English language proficiency tests are not required, participants should be capable of understanding and actively engaging in English-language discussions.
Fellowship Benefits
Most fellows benefit from comprehensive financial support. Successful applicants have their programme fees fully covered and receive a stipend of £2,000 per month, sufficient to cover living costs such as housing and food. Additionally, travel expenses to and from the UK, including visa-related fees, are fully paid.
During the fellowship, participants are expected to focus exclusively on their research and refrain from any professional employment. The program annually selects around 30 seasoned journalists from diverse backgrounds who bring unique perspectives and expertise to the Institute.
Fellows become part of a cutting-edge academic environment that actively influences key discussions in the media sector. The Reuters Institute conducts world-class research addressing the most pressing challenges facing journalism today. The institution embraces a global perspective, with Journalist Fellows representing a wide range of countries, media formats, and journalistic traditions, fostering rich exchanges of ideas and experiences.
Participants will also enjoy the unparalleled resources and academic reputation of Oxford, one of the world’s premier universities. Its extensive libraries, advanced research facilities, and strong academic support provide an ideal setting for intellectual growth. Moreover, Oxford’s proximity to London—just about an hour by train—offers convenient access to major news organizations such as The Guardian, Financial Times, and the BBC, enhancing networking and career opportunities.
